The fifth season of The Chosen proved to be an emotional rollercoaster for the cast, as revealed in a candid chat with Reach Screentime. Shahar Isaac and Vanessa Benavente, who portray Peter and Mary respectively, shared insights into their characters' harrowing journeys as they navigate the tumultuous events leading up to Jesus of Nazareth's (Jonathan Roumie) betrayal and crucifixion, reports the Mirror US.
Isaac described the experience as "heartbreaking" detailing how the disciples go from being warmly embraced by the masses to suddenly finding themselves in peril within the first couple of episodes of the Bible series. He delved into Peter's personal collapse this season, stating: "I'm collapsing a little bit in this season."
He further elaborated on Peter's trajectory, which sees him rise to leadership only to plummet into despair: "The arc is starting from very, very high and crashing very, very low."
He also teased the uncertainty Peter faces, hinting at future developments: "I stay in that limbo and wonder if I chose the right path and if this was all a mistake, and the rest we will find out in season six and seven."
Benavente spoke about the complex emotions her character grapples with, balancing unwavering support for her son while bracing for the agony of his impending fate: "For me and Mary, the hardest challenge was striking that balance between supporting your son no matter what and dealing with the inevitable heartbreak of knowing his end is near and that you have to prepare yourself to say goodbye."
"I think that she's navigating these waters, where she wants to be with him as much as possible and spend every moment with him, yet that means she's going to be witness to some really sad moments that also come."
She warned Mother Mary would be venturing into "very dark places" in the fifth season as she grapples with her son's demise and begins "slowly learning to say goodbye".
The fifth season of Dallas Jenkins' biblical epic The Chosen is set to be the most ambitious yet, with its episodes divided into three parts for a global cinematic release.
The Chosen: The Last Supper will depict the dramatic arrest of Jesus as he challenges the established order and strives to spread his teachings.
His disciples are left devastated, only understanding too late the essence of Jesus' teachings.
Isaac hinted at a unique portrayal of the Last Supper, saying it's "a version that hasn't been seen before".
"There's a dreamlike quality to the Last Supper and we catch in different moments and snippets," he shared, noting the filming was an "very intimate" affair during a week of night shoots.
Looking forward to season six, Benavente mentioned it would mark Mother Mary's "final goodbye" to Jesus prior to his ascension.
While seasons six and seven of 'The Chosen' have been greenlit, creator Jenkins has urged fans in a livestream to remain "patient" as production on the new season progresses.
In the interim, fans can enjoy season five on the big screen, with the series subsequently arriving on a variety of streaming platforms, including The Chosen app.
The Chosen: The Last Supper Part 2 and Part 3 will be in UK cinemas for one weekend only (Part 2: May 16 & 17, Part 3: May 18 & 19)
