Meghan Markle gave a rare insight into her home life with son Archie, six, and three-year-old daughter Lilibet. The Duchess of Sussex, 43, revealed her nightly bedtime ritual she performs for her children which saw the former royal in tears. Prince Harry's wife revealed she sends emails to her children "almost every night". The former Suits actress said the idea came from one of the mum friends. While speaking on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast, Meghan shared the private tradition and explained she does it as a way to create a sort of time capsule for them.
Richard Bacon, who appears on Good Morning Britain, reacted to Meghan's admission as he shared a clip of the candid moment. The Duchess said, "I am sending my kids an email every night. By the time they will be 18, there will be around 4000+ emails waiting on them..." The former BBC presenter, 59, took the opportunity to respond to the mum-of-two's admission.
In view of his 1.1 million followers, Richard took to X and said: "I’m trying to imagine turning 18 and my mum presenting me with 4000 emails."
The dig racked up over 200,000 likes on the social media platform, however, his remark did spark criticism as royal fans rushed to Meghan's defence.
One wrote: "It won’t be age 18 when you’re looking for it, it’ll be age 60 or 70 when mom is gone and you’re looking for any small piece of her still present here on earth."
A second penned: "You may not like it or appreciate when you're 18, but there will be a point in your life when you will read those emails and be absolutely sobbing. And at that moment you will be grateful she put in the effort."
"Honestly. This is beautiful. One of the greatest losses in life is losing a parent. One day, those emails will be worth everything to her kids. This is such a gift," a third remarked.
"This woman cannot catch a break, for goodness sake," a fourth fumed.
Another mused: "Lost my mom as a kid. What I wouldn’t give to have just one letter from her."
Others appeared to agree with Richard, as one commented: "I was thinking the same thing like 4000 emails and my moms thoughts sounds like hell to me."
Another added: "This sounds a bit hellish tbh."(sic)
During the chat Meghan revealed the kinds of things she writes in the messages “Before I go to bed almost every night, I email them,” she said. “I email because it doesn’t have to be a heavy lift and you email them like: Here’s your report card from today; Oh my gosh, wasn’t it the funniest thing this morning?; Here’s a picture of you two having breakfast; or Here’s you playing with the dog.
The things that you’re not going to frame, the things that you’re not going to put pen to paper in a journal, but they will end up at one point in their life, maybe when they’re 16 or when they’re 18, [where] I say, here’s an email that I’ve been keeping for you, for your whole life.”
At this point, Meghan began to tear up thinking about it, as she added, “Here’s everything and every moment that I wanted to tell you how much I love you and like how proud I am of you... it’s making me emotional.”
