The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated guidance for Brits travelling to Greece after a recent incident. On Saturday, May 3, an alert was released following a deadly explosion in Thessaloniki.
The alarming event involved a 38 year old woman who lost her life to a bomb that detonated prematurely while she allegedly attempted to place it outside a bank at approximately 5am.
A new Gov.uk alert reads: "There has been an explosion in Thessaloniki in the early morning of 3 May. If you're in the area you should take care and follow the advice of the local authorities."
Additionally, the FCDO maintains its standing advice regarding the threat of terrorism in Greece, cautioning that: "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Greece. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals."
Moreover, past incidents have seen the use of explosives and firearms targeting a variety of locations such as Greek establishments, shopping centres, banks, media outlets, diplomatic missions, and law enforcement agencies.
There is also increased vigilance around specific high-profile sites in light of recent developments in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, resulting in a greater potential for public demonstrations, particularly in downtown Athens.
The FCDO urges British visitors: "Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from protests and follow the advice of local authorities."
