A woman has sparked a debate after sharing her 'unlikely' solution to cleaning her washing machine using only two ingredients. And for once, you won't need to get the white vinegar out!

The cleaning guru, who is known as renovation_44, has shared her easy and cost effective way to clean your washing machine with 'all natural ingredients'.

In her TikTok video, she is seen squeezing toothpaste onto a lemon that has been cut in half before putting it in the washing machine for a cycle. She says this not only remove hard-to-reach dirt and grime but it also leaves your machine smelling fresh.

She said: "Does your washing machine smell? Use this quick hack - toss lemon halves into your empty washer and run the washer on speed wash with very hot water. After the cycle is finished, you have a fresh smelling washer - and for very little cost."

Commenting on her post, one user said: "Appreciate your work!" Another user added: "This is a great tip - thanks."

A third user said: "The lemon works in the dishwasher too. It acts as rinse aid. I’ve used the skins of lemons for the last 15+ years. Wack 'em in the freezer after using the juice."

However, not everyone was convinced by her tactic. They feared it might do more harm than good – and could make a mess too.

One user said: "Goodbye warranty." Another added: "Just use 2-3 dishwasher tablets once a month." And a final user said: "Just use washing machine cleaner. No need for sticky lemons."

More ways to keep your washing machine fresh

Keeping your washing machine fresh is important for maintaining its performance and preventing unpleasant odours. Over time, washing machines can develop mold, mildew, and detergent buildup, especially in high-efficiency (HE) models. So here's what to do...

  • Use a washer cleaner: Many stores sell washing machine cleaning products. Run a cleaning cycle once every 1–2 months to remove unpleasant residue and smells
  • Keep the door open: After every wash, leave the door or lid open to allow moisture to escape and the drum to dry. This helps prevent mold and mildew growth.
  • Clean the gasket: The rubber gasket around the door of a front-loading washer can trap water, detergent, and debris. So make sure to wipe it down regularly.
  • Empty the filter: Many washing machines have a drain or lint filter that can trap debris and cause odours if not cleaned. Check your machine’s manual for instructions on how to locate and clean the filter.
  • Remove wet laundry promptly: Leaving damp clothes in the washer can cause bad smells. Transfer the laundry to the dryer or hang it to dry as soon as the cycle ends.
