Huge cracks have begun to appear in the village of Voutes in Heraklion, Crete. Despite no recorded seismic activity, residents are living in fear after deep cracks suddenly began to appear in the streets and their homes.

Since last week, these fissures have steadily grown, starting near the village church and extending over a 492-foot stretch. Two major ruptures have now cut through local roads and affected at least 10 houses, leaving the community on edge. Greek authorities are also now on high alert.

One of the main concerns among experts is a potential ground subsidence - when the ground beneath a property sinks, pulling the foundations down with it.

Engineers from the local government have begun conducting field assessments, while the Municipality of Heraklion is preparing to declare a state of emergency to facilitate a coordinated response.

On Sunday (April 27), Professor Efthymios Lekkas, head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation (OASP), visited the site alongside Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos.

Prof Lekkas described the situation as a “geological phenomenon in progress,” which has caused “structural failures in homes, public infrastructure, and utility networks”.

“It’s a dynamic and ongoing geological event.”

The professor added that the terrain's morphology and surrounding geological and geotechnical conditions need to be understood to approach the root causes and propose immediate interventions.

The pretty village of Voutes gives visitors a glimpse into the island of Crete’s rich past. It is home to picturesque narrow alleys, taking visitors past derelict factories and old wells.

A short uphill path leads to the Church of Panagia, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Local cafes serve traditional Greek coffee, which can be enjoyed alongside seasonal dishes such as friend zucchini grown in nearby gardens.

At least four homes have been identified by the team of experts as having serious structural concerns, prompting recommendations for temporary evacuation to ensure residents’ safety.

“The priority is the safety of our citizens,” said Mayor Kalokairinos. “We are conducting thorough inspections of public spaces like the kindergarten, church, and playground, as well as all affected homes. Our technical team, alongside Professor Lekkas’ specialists, will provide a clearer picture of the risks by the end of the day.”
