An embarrassing mistake has been spotted on the gravesite of King Carl XVI Gustaf's late sister, Princess Birgitta of Sweden. The princess passed away in Mallorca on December 4, 2024 at the age of 87.

The late royal was the second eldest of King Carl Gustaf's four sisters and was laid to rest in the royal burial ground in Hagaparken in Stockholm. However, a major error has been spotted as images of her grave have emerged.

Photographs show a wooden cross which features a metal plaque and an inscription.

"Princess Birgitta 1927-2024" is written on the plaque. However, the princess was born 10 years later than the inscription claims on 19 January 1937.

It has been speculated, however, that the wooden cross is a temporary grave marker while a tombstone is prepared.

At the time of her death, the King issued a statement which read: “With great sadness today I received the news that my sister, Princess Birgitta, has passed away. My sister was a colourful and forthright person who will be deeply missed by me and my family. Together with my entire family, today I send my condolences to Princess Birgitta's children and grandchildren.”

Princess Birgitta was born at Haga Castle and was the second child of Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sibylla. She grew up at Haga Castle with her siblings and attended boarding school in Switzerland. She trained as a gymnastics director at the Central Institute of Gymnastics and later worked at Brom's School.

In 1961, she married Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern. The couple separated in 1990, though they remained married until his death in 2016. They had three children, Prince Carl Christian (b. 1962), Princess Désirée (b. 1963), and Prince Hubertus (b. 1966).

In the 1990s, Princess Birgitta moved to Mallorca, “where she could live close to nature, mountains and light. Here her golfing was at the centre and it gave her a healthy and social life,” according to the Swedish royal house.
