Brits have been warned to prepare emergency kits as thunderstorm warnings have been issued by the Met Office. Britain's spell of bright sunny weather is expected to come to an end for many across the country as a yellow zone has been designated over much of the UK, meaning that people in this area will potentially face heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the risk of flooding. The area includes the whole of Wales - North Wales, Mid Wales, South West Wales and South East Wales - the West Country, West Midlands and London.

Forecasters say that conditions change from 12pm today (Monday), with blue skies becoming overcast. Meanwhile, some areas could be hit with more than half a month’s worth of rain between midday and 10pm tonight. In just a couple of hours, 40-50mm of rain could fall. When there is a thunderstorm warning in place, the Met Office advises that Brits do a number of things to make sure they stay safe and well during harsh weather conditions, including preparing an "emergency kit".

The Met Office says to use its website to check if your area is at risk of flooding and, if it is, you should take two steps. This includes preparing an emergency flood kit and preparing a flood plan.

The Met Office advises that these emergency storm kits should include insurance documents, a torch, a wind-up or battery radio, warm clothing and blankets, a first aid kit and any prescription medicine, bottled water and non-perishable foods.

Additionally, Brits should check for flood advice in their local area via the Met Office's website and know when and where flooding is expected to hit during a thunderstorm. They should also ensure that mobile devices are fully charged in case power is lost.

Meanwhile, drivers should park their cars outside of flood zones and valuables in homes should be stored up high including electrical devices, important documents and furniture. The Met Office also advises to switch off gas, water and electricity supplies.

Additionally, drivers should be aware of flooded roads and line up alternative routes in the event of closures. Surface water could produce crash-causing spray due as a lack of poor visibility, official warn.

The Met Office's advise reads: "Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before gusty winds arrive, check to ensure moveable objects or temporary structures are well secured. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds, and fences.

"Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary."
